In 1970, Hawaiʻi became the first state to allow abortion at the request of a woman (a commitment that was reaffirmed by the Hawaiʻi State Legislature in 2006). Since that time, the University of Hawaiʻi faculty has been a major provider of abortion care in the state and in the Pacific. In 2006, we furthered our commitment to providing evidence-based family planning and abortion services through the successful implementation of our Kenneth J. Ryan Residency Training Program. We were proud to become the 25th Family Planning Fellowship site in 2012, and as of February 2021, we received full accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

We acknowledge that the ‘āina which the University of Hawai‘i occupies is part of the larger territory recognized by Indigenous Hawaiians as their ancestral grandmother, Papahānaumoku. We recognize that her majesty Queen Lili‘uokalani yielded the Hawaiian Kingdom and these territories under duress and protest to the United States to avoid the bloodshed of her people. We further recognize that Hawai‘i remains an illegally occupied state of America.

As settlers, we seek to support the varied strategies that the Indigenous peoples of Hawai‘i are using to protect their land and their communities, and we commit to dedicating time and resources to working in solidarity.

Mission Statement

The University of Hawaiʻi Complex Family Planning Fellowship is committed to advancing equity, inclusion, anti-oppression, and reproductive justice for all people including patients, trainees, faculty, workforce, and the community in which we live. The principles of equity and inclusion, rooted in our programmatic values of kuleana, pono, and aloha are the foundations of our educational mission. Our curriculum and educational programs reflect our commitment to recognizing and dismantling structures of oppression and privilege within medical education and in complex abortion and contraceptive care.
